Public Tear up and Trample on Mao Zedong’s Portraits

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has oddly stopped

mentioning Mao Zedong’s Theory in major conferences.

After the 18th National People’s Congress (NPC), the CCP will

get rid of Mao Zedong, according to public opinion.

Meanwhile, in Henan Province 4 young men were

summoned for tearing up Mao Zedong’s portraits,

triggering strong dissatisfaction among netizens.

Now an online movement to ‘Tear to Welcome the 18th NPC

and Say No to Authoritarianism’ has been launched.

The public have been tearing up Mao’s portraits

and uploading photos to the internet.

Four young men in Zhengzhou, Henan Province tore up

Mao’s portrait behind his sculpture at Zijingshan Square,

showing their abandoning of any loyalty to Mao

and calling to get rid of Mao’s ideology.

The photos were soon spread online without blockage,

yet on November 1 midnight,

the police summoned well-known Chinese artist

Cao Xiaodong and the other three men involved.

Cao Xiaodong was detained for tearing up Mao’s portrait

and this irritated netizens.

Many writers, journalists, lawyers, and celebrities have

asked the police to release him immediately.

Some netizens warned the Chinese authorities, saying

“if you do not release Cao Xiaodong,

we will set off a massive movement to tear up

the portraits of Mao Zedong”, yet Cao Xiaodong was still not released that day.

On November 2nd, night, an online protest was launched to

‘Tear to Welcome the 18th NPC, Say No to Authoritarianism’.

Netizens tore up and trampled on portraits of dictators

from around the world, most of who were from the CCP.

Netizen ‘Butcher’ said, “It was nothing originally, but

Cao Xiaodong was summoned, which made everyone angry,

so we are supporting the several young men in Zhengzhou.

It is a very good thing to go deified, and return to his (Mao’s)

original face, so that more people will know the truth.”

Hu Jun, who is in charge of a rights movement organization,

says the CCP has tried desperately to cover up Mao’s evil,

so netizens utilized this performance art to express their

hatred towards the Chinese Communist dictatorship.

[Hu Jun, Leader, Rights Movement Organization]:

“In the past, the CCP worshiped Mao Zedong as a god.

But from history we can see the numerous crimes

committed by the CCP in China, and these young people have started to wake up.

Those are young men who tore up Mao’s portraits—born in

the 1980s and 1990s—they learned the truth online.

They learned how the evil CCP system has brought disasters

to people now, as they did in the past.

So now people are starting to abandon the CCP

through their own actions.”

To liquidate Mao has been called for in China for a long time;

at late August, some elderly intellectuals who had witnessed

Mao Zedong’s political movements,

handed a joint letter to the 18th NPC,

“to completely liquidate Mao’s evil crimes”.

They said, Mao Zedong was in power for 27 years in the CCP

and had launched political movements one after another.

The victims ranged from thousands in the ‘Hu Feng injustice’;

to hundreds-of-thousands in the ‘anti-rightist injustice’;

to millions in the ‘anti-rightist movement’;

and to tens-of-millions in the ‘Cultural Revolution’.

According to incomplete statistics, Mao Zedong had caused

83-million innocent deaths, 30-million cases of injustice, and

over 300-million cases of persecution in political campaigns;

causing the worst sum of evil of all tyrants in Chinese history.

[Li Tiantian]: “A so-called ‘great hero’ is nothing more than

someone who went on a killing spree and who’s being despised,

but this evil party is maintaining his reputation.

We can see what a regime it is, a murderer’s regime,

and an extremely evil regime.

Its purpose to keep its name is to maintain its evil system;

this is clear to everyone.”

On October 3, evening, a group of netizens also launched

a massive movement to tear up portraits.

They tore up books with Mao’s portraits, and trampled on

and burnt them, sending their photos to Sina microblog;

yet postings were deleted shortly afterwards.

[Li Tiantian, Human Rights Lawyer in China]:

“People are awakening to destroy the system; it’s good.

This system has existed for 63 years but now it’s developed

into the Internet-era and more people understand the truth

and have the opportunity to express their ideas—

this shows the system will end soon.”

Recently, in several official Chinese media reports, there’s

been no mention of Marxism-Leninism or of Mao’s Theory.

On November 4, the CCP released the 7th Plenary Notice of

the 17th session, but did not mention Mao Zedong Theory.

Outsiders believe that after the 18th NPC, the CCP may

possibly get rid of the so-called ‘Mao Zedong Theory’.
